An aneurysm is basically an abnormal bulging of an artery and they are named based on their location.

As they grow, they put pressure on surrounding organs causing severe headaches or vision problems if located inside the brain. The arterial wall becomes thin and weaker and may eventually rupture. If it ruptures in the brain, it will cause subarachnoid hemorrhage which is a type of stroke and it's life threatening.

They can occur in different areas of the body but they occur most commonly in the aorta. Besides occurring in the heart and the brain, they can occur in the intestine, neck, spleen, behind the knees and thighs, and in other parts of the body.

They can result from atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). With time, the artery walls become thick, get damaged, and lose their inner lining allowing the artery to bulge as a result of pressure from the flow of blood. Controlling blood pressure will help prevent complications down the road. They can also result from certain medical conditions such as Marfan syndrome, certain infections and from diseases that cause inflammation of the blood vessels such as vasculitis.

Different shapes

Saccular - (most common, also called "berry") it bulges from one side of the artery and has a distinct neck at its base.

Fusiform - this type bulges in all directions and has no distinct neck.
Giant - may be saccular or fusiform and measures more than 2.5 cm in diameter. The neck is often wide and may involve more than one artery.

Traumatic - caused by a closed head injury or penetrating trauma to the brain.

Scientific evidence has shown that whilst in a meditative state lasting changes are produced in the brain, especially in areas associated with happiness. There are many more benefits to practicing meditation so let's look at some of these now.

People who practice regular mindful meditation believe that it reduces negative feelings and tension and also leads to a deepening sense of inner peace and calm.

It is a great shame that we very rarely live in the present moment and appreciate what is happening right now. It often takes pleasurable experiences such as eating, drinking or making love to bring us into the present moment. By practicing mindful meditation we can teach ourselves to appreciate the here and now.

A lot of people may state that they don't have time to meditate. Surely though with all the benefits provided by regular mediation they should make time. What else can be achieved in the ten to fifteen minutes it takes to meditate that would have such a vast and positive effect on one's life? And let's face it the millions of people who already practice it can't all be wrong.

That said let's now take a look at the actual practice of mindful meditation.

Meditation Practice

Meditation is practiced in many different ways which include just sitting in silence, focusing on an object such as a candle, chanting mantras, listening to calming music or being guided through your meditation by a purchased tape or compact disc. Some people also like to burn relaxing incense or essential oils. The trick to meditation is finding the right technique for you.

In a minute I will show you a meditation that covers all the basics needed to get you started. After that, I will provide you with links to some websites containing products that you may want to use to enhance and improve your meditation experience.     

Meditation can be practiced at any time but is generally easiest to do in the morning when first waking. This is due to the fact that you are still in a relaxed state and the internal chatter of your thoughts is at its lowest.

Set aside time every day to practice your meditation. A good start would be five to ten minutes. With more practice this can be increased to whatever length of time you feel comfortable with.

The Meditation

Make sure you are wearing lose and comfortable clothing and that you are in an area where you feel comfortable, safe and won't be disturbed.

Sit in an upright position with your back straight, if you like you may use a chair or lean up against a wall. What's important here is that you feel comfortable and relaxed.

If possible cross your legs over and place your hand's palms up on your thighs or knees, if you can't cross your legs then that's fine too, again whatever feels most comfortable for you.

Close your eyes and turn your attention to your breathing. With every outward breath feel that you are becoming more and more relaxed, letting go of any worry or tension. Slow you're breathing down, pause it at the peak of your inward breath for a few seconds then slowly breath out once more, feeling more and more relaxed.

If you like with each outward breath you can imagine a different part of your body relaxing, starting from your head and working down to your toes.

Now focus your attention inwards, allowing any noises or disturbances to flow away. Don't let yourself be distracted by your thoughts or try to control them. Just acknowledge them, accept them and let them flow away. At first your thoughts may jump around but eventually,y they will fade away. Remember to stay focused on your breathing as this will help to silence the internal chatter of your mind.

Continue with this for as long as you feel comfortable, then when your ready slowly open your eyes and let yourself awaken, feeling energized and at one with your inner self.
